The translation department started as an independent program within the language Department of the school of Humanities in the academic year 2000-2001 to teach translation and interpreting and to grant a master's degree in this field for the first time in the history of Libyan universities. The establishment of the master's program in translation and interpreting came in response to the country's need to provide translators, interpreters and translation professors. After three years, the list of graduates of the Academy began to include graduates of the master's degree in the fields of translation and interpretation. Five years later, in 2006, the language school was established, and with it the specialized study programs were transformed into independent departments, including the translation department. In order to meet the country's needs for specialized translators, and as a result of the increasing demand for studying translation and specializing in it, the administrative and commercial translation division was established along with the translation and interpretation division, where the first batch enrolled to study in the field of administrative and commercial translation in the spring semester 2007. The department awards a high Bachelor's degree (master's) in translation and interpreting and a high Bachelor's degree master's in administrative and business translation.

The department is considered an outstanding center in the field of preparation of translators, scientific research and in the development of translation theories and their applications.

The Department seeks to provide an appropriate environment for the preparation and training of translators in the fields of translation and interpretation to meet the requirements of society, and also seeks to contribute to enriching knowledge through cultural communication while preserving cultural and ethical identity.

1. Preparing professors who are able to teach translation to fill the shortage suffered by Libyan universities.
2. Preparing translators and interpreters to carry out translation work in the public and private sectors.
3. Encourage the study of issues and problems related to translation and try to find solutions to them.
4. Development of scientific research skills in the fields of translation and interpretation.
5. Developing the knowledge and skills of the Department's faculty members and informing them of the latest developments in the field of translation.
